Muradel Demonstration Plant

Overview

Aquest played a crucial role in completing and commissioning the installation for the project with Muradel, a joint venture between Adelaide and Murdoch universities. They provided comprehensive support in Electrical, Instrumentation, Communications, and HVAC throughout the project, including the installation of a $100k security camera network.

Project Scope

The project aimed to design, build, commission, and operate a fully integrated marine microalgae-to-biofuel demonstration plant in Whyalla, South Australia. The scope was centred around five key objectives:

  1. Optimise Recycle of Growth Media Substrate: Enhance the recycling of water and nutrients into growth ponds for sustainable and continuous marine microalgal biomass production.
  2. Integrate Proprietary Harvesting Technologies: Incorporate Muradel’s harvesting technologies into the growth ponds to significantly reduce energy usage and the carbon footprint of these operations.
  3. Design and Build the Muradel Demonstration Plant (MDP): Scale-up from 200m² to 4000m² ponds with integrated harvesting and static mixing technologies to improve biomass productivity.
  4. Incorporate Whole Biomass Conversion Technology: Implement technology for converting and extracting biomass into green crude.
  5. Finalise Design of the Integrated Production Module: Develop a sustainable and commercially viable marine microalgae-to-green crude process that can be replicated to meet production requirements.
