SIMEC Mining Pellet Plant Balling Line Upgrades
OVERVIEW
Aquest successfully completed a comprehensive upgrade project at the SIMEC Mining Pellet Plant in Whyalla, SA, aimed at enhancing the pellet-making process and improving electrical safety.
The project involved replacing 60-year-old open fuse panels with modern SCADA-controlled Motor Control Centres (MCCs) and was accomplished over 26,000 hours during the COVID pandemic.

Project Scope
1. Modernisation and Safety Enhancement
- Demolished outdated infrastructure and installed, tested, and delivered new MCCs and panels for the Ore Prep and Balling area
- Replaced old open fuse panels with advanced SCADA-controlled MCCs
2. Seamless Integration
- Installed all necessary cabling and components
- Commissioned the MCCs and integrated them into the Plant SCADA & Control system for improved control and monitoring
3. Civil and Safety Improvements
- Conducted a civil study of the Ore Prep 1st Floor switchroom, which included the safe removal of asbestos flooring
- Identified and installed modern equivalents for fused distribution boards, PLC panels, field control stations, and remote isolators
4. Compliance and Thorough Testing
- Prioritised safety and compliance throughout the project
- Conducted thorough testing and commissioning of all equipment
- Completed all documentation to the highest standards, meeting company and Australian standards, project specifications, and safety and environmental requirements
